One of the country’s biggest videogame conferences, organizers of the Shanghai event are cracking down on one of its main attractions, its famed “bikini girl” exhibitors.

The move had some unintended consequences. The lack of bare female flesh annoyed fans, both male and female, and led the media to focus on another less well-known feature of ChinaJoy: its cosplay enthusiasts and cross-dressers. Though organizers of ChinaJoy have made noise about ratcheting up controls on scantily clad models in the past, Yu Kun, vice secretary general of ChinaJoy’s organizing committee, said this year the conference strictly enforced limits on the number of models per booth and what those models could wear. New rules barred showgirls from exposing more than half of their back, prevented companies from pasting logos on “sensitive” parts of models, and forbid male models from taking off their shirts.
