Making and wearing costumes piqued his interest in 2008, the year he took part in The New Paper Big Walk dressed as a samurai. But a hernia operation shortly after has kept him from following that passion in a bigger way - until now.

Mr Loh chose the Star contest as his cosplay, or costume play, debut because of the familiar name of The Straits Times, which he is an avid reader of. Cosplay Outfits

It may be described as play, but he is getting the jitters before the competition. 'My heart is beating so badly,' said Mr Loh, who may go dressed as Robin Hood or as the Monkey God from the Chinese classic Journey To The West.

Participants, who can dress up as a superhero, movie character or anime figure, will also have to act the part.

The cosplay contest is part of the Star Carnival, which will be held at Gardens by the Bay on Sunday from 3pm. The carnival is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a ticketed Star Concert.
